Have you found Teapigs tea at the grocery store and seen some of their wonderful flavour blends? Their flavours aren’t just the run-of-the-mill lemon and ginger, or peppermint tea, but with names like Crème Caramel and Chocolate Flake tea, to a sweet lover the thought of a tea that tastes like a dessert is the holy grail!

I’ve had my eye on their Rooibos Crème Caramel tea for a while and decided to try my luck in getting a sample. To be honest, the packs available in store have always seemed too expensive to me. Actually, there’s just something that won’t let me justify spending £4+ for 15 teabags that I may not like, so a sample seemed the best way to try these out. When I contacted Teapigs via Twitter, they very thoughtfully sent me samples of Crème caramel, Calm, and Super Fruits (not to be confused with Tetley’s Super Fruits).

First off, can I just mention that one of the reasons that Teapigs has caught my attention is because of the packaging. It’s cute and it’s original. I love the quirky illustrations that each flavour has associated with it. Which is really quite useful if you’re shopping in a hurry, and confronted by a wall of tea varieties – “oh which one was it again?”. Well, Teapigs have provided you with the key in the form of a memorable visual aid. In this manner, they help you find their brand, and your favourite flavour time and time again.

Rooibos Crème Caramel

Examining the teabag before placing it into the cup, I noticed that there was a little cube of caramel in the bag. Clearly, this was exciting! Then upon brewing, the aroma is definitely rooibos tea with the tiniest hint of cinnamon. The caramel doesn’t come through so much which was disappointing. The tea brews to a deep amber colour.

Adding a dash of milk makes the tea take on a completely different flavour. In addition, the flavour becomes less crème caramel, more rhubarb tart. It’s the strangest thing! Generally, it’s not bad, it’s just not crème caramel and I was expecting big things!

Calm – Chamomile, Lemon Grass and Valerian Tea

Steeping this tea releases that grassy, hay-like, end-of-the-summer smell of chamomile. And it of course tastes of chamomile… Just chamomile. Disappointing. I was expecting some punchy lemony-citrus flavours to complement the chamomile but it just doesn’t come through.

The mix of chamomile, valerian and lemon balm are all great herbals to relax with, and it’s great that Teapigs have combined them into an easy go-to stress-reliever tea. But what has let me down is that the packaging promises lemon/lime flavours that the tea doesn’t deliver.

Super Fruits – Hibiscus and Berry/Currant Tea

I let the bag brew and on the contrary to the previous 2 teas, I’m pleasantly surprised to find that this tea is very aromatic. Moreover, it reminds me of concentrated blackcurrant juice. I tried it hot but it would make a great iced tea also.

The colour is that of a red wine and the flavour is very berry-centric. Not a sweet berry, but an oh my goodness, screw up your face, bitter berry!! After a good helping of honey, it took off the tart edge off and all was rectified. Still, I would never choose this variety of tea myself, and probably would never have tried it if I never received it as a sample.

My Thoughts

I had high hopes for these teas as they’re expensive to buy in the shops – looking forward to trying out the Rooibos Crème Caramel initially, I had also been sent two more flavours by Teapigs HQ.

I was disappointed that both the Rooibos Crème Caramel and the Calm tea just didn’t hit it for me and didn’t deliver on the flavours I was expecting. The Super Fruit tea redeemed the trio, but I still don’t know if I would buy it. Sorry Teapigs – maybe the selection I tried was too small, but I can’t see myself buying these varieties any time soon.
